I've been asked that by a few people over the last 7 months. I haven't made an entry since the middle of December, and there have been some small changes since then. Let me back track to the start of this year.

Craig was still on the regional team, mainly doing 200-300 miles a day runs in Washington and the Portland area. We took a week's vacation and traveled down to California to visit family and friends at the end of February. Shortly after returning, Craig was told to turn in truck 418 and move into a brand new heavy haul truck.

Boy, talk about a shock. It took us by surprise, and upon getting the keys to the truck and checking out the inside, we began to wish we had our old truck back. This heavy haul had absolutely no storage and was much smaller inside, so much so that is was near impossible to stand and have any room to change clothes. Bottom line, we were miserable in that truck, and with it having the big stacks, it was a beast to back up.

I opted to get off the truck to give Craig more room, but there was never any love lost with him being in that truck and we looked into ways to remedy that situation. He could go back running solo up and down the west coast again, or there was the option to go back to team driving and make a bit more money. Since Craig was just at three years until he could retire, we opted for him to go back to team driving to make the most money that he could and possible retire 6 months prior to his 62nd birthday.

The only mandatory request that Craig had for a team driver was that he be a non-smoker. That proved to be quite the request to fill, and as weeks went by, and no co-driver could be found, Craig grew more and more unhappy driving that heavy haul truck. Thankfully, the boss knew of his unhappiness and decided to put him in a brand new team truck as a solo driver until they could find him a partner.

Let's just say that the new team truck was like the Taj Mahal compared to the heavy haul truck. Extremely roomy, tons of storage, a passenger seat that swivels 360 degrees, a refrigerator, and no stacks to block his view when backing up. Shortly after moving into truck 448, I had the opportunity to check it out, and if he could keep this truck until he retired, without going team, I would be back with him in a flash.

As it stands now, Craig is basically a solo driver awaiting finding that right person to team with, and I am staying at home and enjoying having family come up and visit me. We've found that during the summer, especially in the Central Valley of California, it is just too hot to have Craig sleep on the upper bunk when I'm with him. That's not to say, if a co-driver is not found by November, that you will probably find me back out in the truck with Craig.

As far as updating the blog, since I'm not on the truck, it is difficult to find much to blog about, but I will certainly try to post whenever there is anything of interest to share. Until then, we are counting down the months (32) until Craig can finally hang up his CDL and fully retire here at home with me.

We made it home this past Thursday for home time. With as mild as the weather has been lately, we really didn't expect to see much snow when we arrived at home. Boy, were we surprised. It looked like a winter wonderland.

We had a bit of surprise when Craig went to turn the water on. Seems our heat strip was malfunctioning and with the minus degree weather we had the previous week the water had frozen. Craig had to drive into town to purchase a new one and within about 10 minutes the water was flowing again.

During our first night, there was an additional showering of snow, just enough to cover our Jeep. With all this snow around us, we figured we'd BBQ some New York steak that Tyson so generously donated to us before our last home time, when a shipper refused a case because the box was torn. We love those kind of rejects right before home time when our cooler is empty!
Craig managed to do the lazy man BBQ'ing from his recliner in the living room. We made sure to cook extra to take back out with us on the truck. Looking at the weather forecast for the next 10 days or so, it still appears that we'll have milder than normal snowfall and temperatures. We'll take that as we look forward to another couple of days at home in a mere 14 days.

The weather. Seems like that was all everyone was talking about last week, and no more so than on Facebook. My California friends were lamenting about the cold, a mere 26 degrees, while at home in Usk, WA we had minus 9 degrees. When we're in the truck and traveling we hit just about everything Mother Nature throws out there, but we always manage to remain toasty warm inside our moving semi truck.
When we received a load of meat for the Portland, OR area, we were shocked as we traveled our favorite scenic route, Highway 84 along the Columbia Gorge. Jack Frost had payed a visit and threw in a fair amount of snow. Craig and I both commented that we had never seen this much snow in this area in all our previous winters of traveling through it. It almost reminded us of our days of traveling through some areas of Canada.
I know I'm jinxing myself, but so far, this is the latest into the season that we haven't had a fair amount of snow fall. I'm not complaining, I like the roads clear and bare, as it makes for much safer travels with all the four wheelers out on the roadways. I'd much rather enjoy all the snow in the comforts of home, which we will be for a couple of days this week.

We went back to work the day before Thanksgiving getting a dispatch to deliver juice to Wal Mart. I love these runs, short and sweet, and by 7pm we were empty and headed into Prosser, WA for the night. This is the first time since driving truck that we haven't been able to find someplace to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal. Craig tried to make things better by finding an app on his tablet with a roaring fire. It did make our simple in truck dinner a little cosier.
Thanksgiving morning we walked to the Starbucks across the street and enjoyed a hot coffee and read about the storm that was heading our way. We did a little local pickup on Friday and on Saturday was given a Tyson meat load with 5 deliveries over three days. With our routing we knew we would be in Union Gap, WA on Sunday, and with an Outback Steakhouse next door to the truck stop, we could enjoy a Thanksgiving meal then.
While we were eating several of the other diners were getting phone calls on their cells regarding Snoqualmie Pass and the snow that was expected. We went to sleep that night not knowing what we would encounter when we made our own trek over the pass at daybreak. In the morning I checked on road conditions and found that the pass had been closed due to high winds and trees removal, so we went about our deliver in Union Gap and hoped for the best.
By the time we finished up and had to make our way to Everett, WA the pass was opened up with snow and slush on the roadway. We expected it to be worse than it was, but by the time we got up the hill it was looking pretty good. We can only hope the rest of the winter snow driving is as nice.
I've been back out on the truck since November 1st, and have noticed over the past two weeks how quickly Fall is giving way to Old Man Winter. There are only a few areas where you can still see some Autumn colors before it will be covered in a blanket of white snow. I'm holding onto as much of it as I can before the snow boots come out from the side compartment on the truck.
We've had some great runs since I've been on the truck, and we are scheduled for home time next Saturday. We plan to go back out on the road the day before Thanksgiving, and hope to take home time every two weeks during the Winter in an attempt to keep up with the snow at home. It will also give me a chance to try my hand at driving in snow again, especially since we purchased the Jeep 4x4 with that purpose in mind. I'll let you know how that goes.
That is why I have been spending this season at home enjoying the changing colors. I'll be back on the truck by the 1st of November and no doubt blogging about our winter adventures. Until then, I'm enjoying the beautiful scenery at home.
The other day really made us stop and laugh out loud. We were rolling along Interstate 90 in Washington and up ahead we see a car pulled over to the side of the road.

Nothing too strange about that, except we see a young lady squatting down taking care of nature's business, right out in the open, which we don't see every day. Just as we approach the vehicle and move to the outside lane, she stops mid stream, so to speak, to raise her right arm frantically up and down, signaling the international sign for a truck driver to blow the air horn on the truck. With no other traffic around us, we felt it only right to oblige her request, laughing for a good few miles down the road.

Long gone are the days of driving 11 hours, stopping just long enough to put in your mandatory break, and then taking off for another day of 11 hours of driving. With trips of no longer than 200-400 miles, the days are now quite relaxing, although I must confess there are still days, or should I say nights of driving. But as Craig says, 5 hours driving at night isn't as bad as 11 hours.

We're discovering new joints to take the place of the ones we had to give up when we went regional. No longer can we plan on a great meal at Dos Amigos in Weed, CA, but we can count on a fantastic meal at Ramblin' Jacks Rib Eye in Chehalis, Washington, off exit 72 on Interstate 5.

We first noticed this place a few years ago when it was closed and under a refurbishing. After it was reopened, we just never had time to stop there long enough to check it out. That all changed last week when we were sent to Chehalis to drop our trailer at the Fred Meyer DC there, and await a load for later in the evening. We were happy to walk across the parking lot from the truck stop to enjoy a late lunch.

We were not disappointed, and can see why Ramblin' Jacks is known as Chehalis' best restaurant. We started our meal with deep fried dill pickles, and made a mental note to try the deep fried bacon and gravy as an appetizer the next time we stop there. Craig had a tri tip french dip sandwich, and I had a bacon/blue cheese burger, but swapped out regular fries for sweet potato fries. We only finish half of our lunch as we wanted to leave room to try a dessert.

We opted for the cowboy cookie, which was a warm chocolate chip cookie, piled high with two scoops of vanilla ice cream, topped with whipped cream and caramel sauce. We we both happy that we had only eaten half of our lunch, as we had no problem finishing off the dessert. They offer quite an array of dessert with include fresh from scratch fruit pies in season.

With our to go boxes in hand, we left Ramblin' Jacks knowing that at the first opportunity, we would be returning to enjoy a great meal. If you're ever in the area, you should make it a point to stop and maybe take on the "Cattle Drive Challenge" which is a 1.5 pound burger, with fries and topped off with a 1 pound cinnamon roll. Go ahead..... I dare you.

Every once in awhile, we get a load to a place we haven't been before, and last week that location was Libby, Montana. It's a quick over and back from the company yard in Spokane to Libby with a small 30 foot trailer that gets dropped in the yard around 4am. It's loaded with grocery items to be delivered to a little "mom and pop" grocery store.
The ride over is beautiful. Up Highway 95 from Coeur d'Alene and then over on Highway 2 out of Bonners Ferry. Following the Kootenai River, you pass by the scenic Kootenai Falls. Upon arrival in Libby, you can't help but notice all the metal eagle sculptures all around town. It was fun as we were coming and going to try can capture as many as I could.
Another somewhat fun thing was, once we arrived at the store, there of course was no dock. We had to pull up in the alley and off load by hand all the items onto a metal roller conveyor which was propped up on milk crates. Between a store employee, and Craig and I, we had the trailer unloaded in about 40 minutes. Sure was interesting seeing all the items the store had ordered, including a pallet full of ice cream!
First off, I'm still withholding my final assessment of this new team that Craig is on for another month of so, but so far, it almost seems too good to be true. No load is ever much over 300 miles, we've yet to be close to being out of hours to complete an assignment, and we seem to have plenty of time to stop and take in some of the sights along the way.
Case in point is this huge warehouse fruit stand/antique mall. It is three stories of utter goodness from the fresh orchard fruits, the vast variety of sweets, canned goodies, fresh lavender, and two levels of vintage finds to feast your eyes on. What better place to spend your mandatory 30 minute new "hours of service" break.
It was somewhat crowded when we stopped by, being the four day Fourth of July weekend and all, but with a warehouse this big, we didn't even seem to notice the crowds. After walking all three levels, we ended up at the most natural place for me..........the homemade ice cream case. There were only about 6 flavors to choose from, but right there in front was the one I had my eyes on. Maple flavored cookie dough ice cream! Oh my...what a treat.
As luck would have it, along with this warehouse on Interstate 90 just outside of Ellensburg, there is another one on Interstate 82 near Yakima. Both of them on routes we will be traveling several times a week, if not twice a day. I'd say its a big "win-win" for us and a place we will definitely be stopping at again.
With the "Love of Junk" sale behind me, and too many snowbirds flocking back to our neighborhood for the summer, it was time for me to jump back onto the truck for a little while. Craig and I enjoyed some home time together, and when Sunday morning rolled around, we were headed back to the yard to load up the truck.
Craig is trying out a new division within the company called the 25% team. He was getting tired of dealing with the LA traffic and drive, and since Craig is getting closer to his projected retirement age, he wanted to stay more regional. This team of drivers handles the loads that are all within about 300 miles from the Pasco, WA yard, mainly delivering to the Portland/Seattle area. Instead of getting paid by the mile, you get 25% of the total load payment to the company.
Craig has been on it for a couple of weeks now, and he is loving it. No more 11 hours of non stop driving, which was beginning to take a toll on him. He is averaging about 8 hours or so a day, and is feeling so much more relaxed out on the road. It also is much more conducive to taking home time and getting home when you want, since you are only a days drive away from either Pasco or Spokane.
We are toying with the idea of making Pasco our home base during the winter and moving our personal vehicle there. He seems to go through Pasco at least 3 times a week, and with our vehicle there we can use it to get groceries and get away from the truck when we are waiting for a Tyson meat load. We have already planned out a few road trips to take during some home times to go out exploring the nearby areas.
I've been in Walla Walla the past 8 days, 5 of which I have been helping my BFF Cori get ready for the "Love of Junk" sale which was being held for the first time just about a mile from her house. There is always a mad rush of activity getting ready for these types of shows, so I try to come a bit early to help her put the finishing touches on some of her pieces. I had also worked on a few small pieces of my own prior to arriving.
Sunday through Wednesday we painted, waxed, stacked, and priced the pieces we wanted to bring. Then on Thursday, we set up our space after making seven trips with the van and truck to bring it all to the venue. I wish I would have taken the time to take pictures of the venue, as it was such a great place to hold this type of event. Lots of red barns, a large grassy area with big shade trees and picnic benches and several yummy food vendors.
By late Thursday night, we had set up and tried to get some quality sleep as we knew that Friday would be a long twelve hour plus day. The crowds were great, and we had a continuous parade of customers throughout the morning and lunch time hours. The afternoon died down a little bit, but picked up for the after work crowd.
At 7pm we shut down for the day and dragged our tired bodies back home to rest up for the Saturday buyers. Back at it again at 8am, we watched as bit by bit of just about all the small items we had were picked over. Towards the end of the day, the big pieces starting flying out of the booth with last minute shoppers. We were oh so happy to have only three trips to take what was left back to Cori's house.
All in all, for a first time event it was ran beautifully, and I'm sure Cori will want to participate in it again next year. For now, she will be busy trying to coordinate her own sale at her Cottage on the Hill. We were able to get quite a few vendors interested in selling there in September, along with a food vendor. I'm sure it will be a great event on her second year of putting on her own show in the Walla Walla area. For updates on the event you can check out the Facebook page Cottage on the Hill Autumn Sale
All my purchases together were around $100 and Cori spent even less! I'm sure her husband Mike was in shock over that.
One of my first purchases at Farm Chicks was this metal film reel canister. Our spare room in the loft has a vintage camera theme going on, and this canister fit right in. While I am at Cori's house next week for a Barn Sale we are participating in, I'm going to have her cut me some lettering to make a vintage Eastman Kodak sign for the room.
Next up is this little stone mannequin. I couldn't pass it up at one of the consignment stores in downtown Spokane. I think it fits in nicely with the wooden one up on my shelves above the french doors.
I've really gotten into the industrial look lately, and when I saw this old, rusty gym locker basket, I couldn't pass it up. I think it looks great next to the marquee letter above the cabinet in the living room. When we took out the small TV that was the counter, and opted for the big screen mounted on the wall, that space just screamed for something to fill it up. I thought painting that area in chalkboard paint was just the ticket for a whimsy bit of fun. Now whenever we have anyone over we can offer them a chance to add to the wall.
This little stool caught my eye towards the end of the day on Sunday. It had a huge bouquet of flowers sitting on it that didn't give you a chance to really see the stool. That was good news for me, because once I laid eyes on it, I had to get it. It ties in nicely with the industrial cart that I found online that we use for an occasional table between our two chairs in the living room.
Once I got back from our Farm Chicks weekend, I painted our little dining room table from it's boring wood to a nice neutral cream with some distressing to fit right in with everything else in the room. As I told Craig and Cori, I really can't see that I need anything else to complete this room. I know, I know.....famous last words, but I'm standing by them, at least until next years show!
The first weekend of June. After five years, that now symbolizes where I will be, and who I will be with........Farm Chicks Show with my BFF Cori for a fun filled girls weekend in Spokane, WA. This year we made it a four day extravaganza, starting with checking into the fabulous Norther Quest Casino just outside of Spokane. Staying there gave us the opportunity to indulge in a five start hotel and also have the fun and excitement of having a Las Vegas style casino just steps away from our room.
Thursday we spent our time catching up and taking in the casino. Friday we hit up all the vintage stores that Spokane has to offer both in the downtown area and the older Monroe district. We took time out for some wine, lunch, and a dessert at Madeleines Cafe and Patisserie in downtown, sitting in their outside dining courtyard. It was a beautiful sunny day and we enjoyed the people watching almost as much as the wine.
Saturday is always a mad house on the first day of Farm Chicks. We have learned to stay far away from that kind of mayhem and enjoyed a nice relaxing morning in our hotel room. By early afternoon we headed to the fair grounds to at least take in the first day excitement, but with hopes of a thinned out crows. Boy were we surprised to see the parking lot completely filled, but managed to find a spot along side the perimeter of the lot.
Once inside, it was a buzz of activity from the annual creative display at the entrance to the mass of female estrogen shopping frenzy that was going on. I even saw a few good hearted husbands carrying bags and treasures trying to keep up with their wives. It was hard to see all that the vendors had displayed in their booths due to the crowds, but Cori and I got a good feel of what was there and made our plans for a full day of shopping on Sunday.
We headed back to the hotel for a nice dinner and evening of slot machine playing. Early Sunday morning, we hit the local Starbucks and then made our way back to the fair grounds. We were happy to see that the parking lot still had plenty of spots as we parked as close as we could and got to the gates as they were opening at 9am.
The first couple of hours were nice, as we had ample space to truly look into the booths and enjoy the displays. We were a bit disappointed to see that some of the big name bloggers were not there this year as in past years. We also discussed that as the years progress, and we participate in our own sales like the "Cottage on the Hill" sale in September, that we just weren't as awed by some of the displays as we have in past years.
Sunday night afforded us one last night to enjoy the casino and night life and we took full advantage of it. All too soon it was time to part ways and close the book on our 5th year at Farm Chicks knowing full well that we will be back again next year to enjoy our girls weekend in Spokane.

Where we live, we are surrounded on all sides by National Forests. Craig has been longing to go exploring and find a place to do some shooting. So last week, when he was home on time off, we took off in the pickup and drove deep into forest land, where there were no more pavement, and walked through vegetation to find a clearing to do some shooting.
You can see from the photos that the only thing we had handy to use as targets were paper plates. They didn't stand a chance and were soon looking like Swiss cheese by the time we packed it in to go home. It really is great to live in the area that we do, with so much of the outdoors to be enjoyed. I hope we never take it for granted just how lucky we are to live where we do.

We recently had to replace all four tires on our pickup. They still had plenty of tread, but their age were showing with some cracks on the side walls. No one wants to shell out that kind of money, but you do what you have to do.

What I don't understand, is being a company driver, not having to pay out of your own pocket for tire repair, and just ignoring tires that need to be replaced. All too often, and especially lately, Craig has had to take time out of his driving hours to have trailer tires replaced.

I get that it is a pain, but to blatantly drop a trailer that is in need of a tire replacement, and leave it to the next driver to take care of is unacceptable. There should be some type of reprimand for that lazy, thoughtless driver, but I know that is a pipe dream to ever think that this situation will change.

I'm just happy that Craig is diligent about his pre/post trip inspections, replaces tires that need it, and can handle the occasional tire blow out, which he had just yesterday, and live to tell me about it. God help some of these drivers that aren't as safety conscious.

I was on the phone with Craig this morning and was looking at some patches of blue skies outside. As we neared the end of our conversation, I got up to look out the kitchen window and was shocked to see that it was SNOWING! No kidding, it was snowing and the landscape was quickly turning into a winter wonderland.

If you didn't figure it out from my first paragraph, I'm staying off the truck for a few weeks to enjoy what I thought would be our fantastic springlike weather. Thankfully, the snow didn't last long, and it was soon melted off when it turned into a more springlike rain.

Today is Craig's birthday. With each passing year, we are counting down four more years until he retires from driving truck. Until then, we are still mulling over a couple of other divisions at work that would keep him more local and home every week instead of every three weeks.
I love cooking other things with bacon, especially green beans, brussel sprouts, or bacon wrapped asparagus. I love bacon and eggs, bacon on baked potatoes, and bacon in spinach salads. So when Craig and I decided to grab some dinner at Denny's last night, I was more than happy to look at their special "BACONALIA" menu.

I didn't choose anything off the bacon menu, instead opting for a healthier option. I never expected, when the waitress came by at the end of our meal and asked about dessert, as I was saying "no", Craig vetoed that with a "we'll try the bacon brownie sundae". I think the look on my face was priceless, as Craig started laughing. I mean I love bacon, and have heard previously of chocolate covered bacon and such, but bacon, ice cream, and a brownie? Hey, I'm game.

When the sundae arrived at the table, like a real trooper, I grabbed my spoon and dug in. The first bite took me awhile to find the bacon flavor lingering in the background. On the second bite, I made sure to get a good dose of bacon and it was then that I was sold. Mama Mia......what a combo! I will be hard pressed not to order this again, or any of their other "bacon" desserts that they are offering. I'm just happy we don't eat there often, and that this is a limited time menu item.

Usually it is the other way around. After going empty in Santa Clara, CA on Sunday afternoon, we headed to Salinas, CA to stage for the first pickup in Castroville on Monday morning.

We left at 7am for our 8am appointment, we only had 13 miles to drive, but since we missed the exit we needed off of Highway 101, we needed all of that time to find a road that would get us turned back around. I secretly hoped that this little mishap would not be a sign of things to come.

As you can see from the picture, Castroville is the artichoke center of the world. I wished we could have stopped at the many produce stands along the road, because they were selling artichokes 10/$1. I don't know about where you live, but at home, the last time I bought an artichoke it was well over a dollar just for one!

We quickly loaded on the four pallets of miscellaneous types of wine, and headed the 15 miles to Watsonville to a little two dock facility in the middle of town to pick up one pallet of wine. Then we headed north to a little town of American Canyon in the Napa Valley. Into an industrial area where the streets were lined with warehouses from some pretty big name vintners from the area.

We pulled up to our shipper and right away ran into problems with a purchase order number. After several phone calls we were finally told to just tell them it was a "rush order", and lo and behold that did the trick, along with an additional $35 fee for processing. After our 8 pallets of wine were loaded on, it was now closing in on 3pm and we knew we would run into commute traffic no matter which way we went, so we chose the way we thought would be the path of least resistance.

The traffic was manageable, and we rolled into our last pick up of the day in Ceres, CA at 6pm at the fourth largest producer of wine in the United States. We gave them the purchase order number and after much paper shuffling and phone calls, we were told that the load had already been picked up earlier in the day. What the hell? More phone calls, names and times written down, and as much info as we could get about what company picked up our load, and we were released by dispatch to leave the premises.
I gotta tell you, it was a long day, and with this last hiccup, I was so tempted to partake in some of that wine in our trailer! We made it back to our company yard in French Camp and called it a night. We now have two leisurely days of driving to make our delivery in Spokane on Thursday morning. Cheers!

I live on the Internet. About the only time I don't have the laptop in front of me on the truck is when I'm sleeping. After all, what else is there to do while traveling up and down Interstate 5 to occupy my time and keep my mind busy. I could never thank Al Gore enough for his invention....(insert sarcasm here).

I can't begin to tell you how many times I've asked Craig a question........like today, "Why is there netting over those orchard trees? I don't remember ever seeing that before". In a blink of an eye, or as fast as our Internet connection is, depending on where we are, I have my answer...... to keep the birds away from young fruit trees.

I use it to pay 100% of our bills and much to my dismay, create some, by ordering products that I come across on the Internet. I can reload my Starbucks card and never fail to have at least one item in my Amazon shopping cart. I play games for hours on end, have a multitude of recipes that I've saved to try once I get home, and of course, I can't forget Facebook. It's how I keep in touch with what's going on with my friends and family.

I really don't know what I'd do without it and I hope I never find out!

It seems like only yesterday, when Craig and I drove to Carmel to get married, but it was in fact twelve years ago. For over half of those years, we have co-existed in a truck, with not more than three feet separating us for 24/7 & 365 days. I'm sure a lot of couples wouldn't be able to do that, but there are a few I know that do, and I think they would agree, it's mandatory that you marry a person who is your best friend.

I know most of you are probably sick of hearing this same spiel every year on our anniversary, but there is not a day that goes by that we do not laugh and have fun. All the romance in the world does not compare to being with someone who brings pure joy and happiness into your life every single day. We've been blessed since the day we met, and continue to be blessed by being able to create memories our on the road to last us a lifetime.
We were treated yesterday, by my twin Nieces, Jennifer and Stephanie, and Grandniece Gwendolyn, picking us up at the truck stop we were at and taking us into town for a bit of shopping and lunch. It's nice that we have family along our normal routing to make these short times off the truck that much more enjoyable.

Today finds us with a trailer full of corndogs from Foster Farms, heading north to Clackamas for a Monday morning delivery. The weather is great, our cupboards are full of food, and only 11 more day until our next home time, when we'll take a week off to open up the house, renew Craigs CDL, and get his annual DOT physical done. Life is good!

After a quick 2 hour nap, we were off on some home time, in which we would enjoy a staycation. First, we headed up to the house to check on the snow levels, we haven't been there since the first of November. We were happy to see that we didn't need to pull down any snow off the roof, and that there was only about 18 inches of snow on the ground.

We decided to stay the night, and in the morning we hit the local, and only, grill in our tiny town of Usk, and enjoyed a fantastic breakfast. With stomachs full, we headed back into Spokane, and checked ourselves into the Northern Quest Casino and Hotel in Airway Heights. We fully intended to have a nice four day staycation.
As you can see, this is a really nice place, with a spa like bathroom with full body spray shower heads lining the walls. It felt as if we were transported to a vacation like setting without driving more than 10 miles from the Company yard. It didn't take long for us to find ourselves on the casino floor and enjoying a little gambling and people watching.

We made sure to take advantage of all the special offers, played Bingo one evening, enjoyed $1 taco night, and registered for all the free money they wanted to give away. You know what? Sometimes your name actually gets called, as did Craig's, while we were playing Bingo, and off he went to claim his $500.00. Nothing says FUN like winning that kinda of money!
By the time Thursday morning rolled around, we felt as if we had been away from the truck for at least a month, that is how rested and relaxed we felt. We had a blast and enjoyed the first, somewhat vacation, in a very long time.

With a phone call into the office at 8am, it didn't take long before we were sent to rescue a load from one of our trucks that had blown a couple of tires. A few hours later, the load was delivered and we were sent to Tyson, in Wallula, WA to drop our empty trailer. We'll have to wait until tomorrow to see where we'll be headed next.

Things have calmed down since our run in with black ice. Although this has been the mildest Winter we have had in awhile, we have put on chains more times in the last two months than we have the previous 7 years. Go figure.
We've been doing a lot of night runs lately. Makes it hard to take pictures and capture life out on the road, but I have managed to take a few here and there. Have seen some magnificent sunrises and sunsets along the way.
We're currently sitting in Milwaukie, OR waiting to get unloaded before our 14 hour clock runs out and we find a place to park for 10 hours. I'm hoping our string of night runs will taper off the rest of the week until we take some time off next week.
I hope to never have to say those two words again, and quite frankly, I've never been so scared in my life as I was Wednesday night. We had finished up an overnight run into the Boise, Idaho area Wednesday morning, and had gotten the usual 10pm load time at Americold in Ontario, Oregon for that night. It had been extremely cold all day, starting out at near zero and hovering at 20 degrees throughout the day. Our loading of the frozen fries went smoothly, and we started out on our 640 mile run to Pleasanton, CA for a Friday morning delivery.

The first 30 miles went great, with the exception of ice forming on the sides of the windshield, the roads seemed fine. "Seemed" is right, because what we couldn't see was the smooth, clear sheets of ice forming onto the road as we approached our first hill. It didn't take long for us to first feel the tires slipping and then lose traction as we slowly climbed. Halfway up we could go no further and knew we had to put chains on. Thankfully, on the secondary highway we were on, Highway 95, there were two lanes for uphill traffic, and by blocking the outside lane, there was still room for any other vehicles to pass safely by.

We quickly put on a set of chains on the drives and one on the trailer and continued up the hill. We passed a couple of other trucks that were stuck on the road, and to be honest, we should have wised up that it wasn't going to get any better further up the road, but with no turnouts or places to pull safely over we continued on. It didn't take too much longer before we were stuck again and had to stop to put a second set of chains on the drives.

We finally reached near the top of the summit when we again lost traction. Looking ahead we saw at least 6 other trucks and cars in the same situation. We were able to get as close to the side of the road as we could, and we assessed the situation and decided to stay put until some sand or daylight helped the situation. Heck, even the DOT trucks were having a hard time staying on the road and getting sand on the roadway.

About three hours later, we could hear traffic moving by us, and we got up to assess the situation. Finding the roads sanded, we drove to a flat area and took the chains off and continued onward. The roads were fine for awhile........then the next major grade we came to the black ice appeared again. We lost traction, truck sliding one way, the trailer the other way, and we had no choice but to stop and put on chains again. By this time we were experts putting on chains and we had them on in 10 minutes flat and making our way up the grade, knowing full well that we were shutting down at the first available place to pull off the roadway.

We managed to drive 190 miles in 9 hours, between that 3 hour stop and putting on chains. There were way too many times we lost traction, too many times we could have lost our lives, and too many times we knew that we should have never left Ontario after getting our load. I have no doubt, that by the grace of God we were saved from a serious accident, and have vowed to each other that we will never have another night like that again. Thankfully, this time we were given the opportunity to live and learn.
Got our rental car, and instead of heading to an Urgent Care Facility to have Craig checked, we successfully ignored all signs and symptoms of something wrong, and proceeded to go about our prescheduled plans. Don't get me wrong, I stressed several times to Craig and we should go have him checked, but he's stubborn, and the doctor was the last person he wanted to go see.

We enjoyed some great times with our families, and by Wednesday, it was apparent even to Craig, that he needed medical attention. Thursday morning, we were sitting in front of the Urgent Care waiting for the doors to open, and an hour later, with medication ordered, we were on our way to pick it up and get Craig on the road to recovery.
I'm happy to report, that Thursday night, was the first night in three weeks that Craig slept through the night. What a relief, not only for him, but for me too, as I had managed to catch a cold while we were off. We sometimes think it is so much better being on the truck and keeping all those germs out there in the world at bay.

Come Friday morning we were back on the board and waiting for our assignment. It didn't come across the computer until 4pm, when we were told to hook up to a loaded trailer at the yard and deliver a load of Foster Farms chicken to Puyallup, WA on Sunday morning. It sure felt great to be back out on the open road, and even better that road and weather conditions were clear with no signs of snow. Now we begin the countdown for our next home time, and hopefully we will be clear of any illnesses to fully enjoy it.
